The use of IVF procedures results in an increased risk for multiple gestation. This table demonstrates the percentage of overall pregnancies that resulted in multiple gestation in our program from 1998-2007, including twins, as well as higher order gestation (triplets or more). The overall percentage of pregnancies resulting in quadruplets (4) or more is < 1%. Overall, 33.5% of our pregnancies were multiple, with 26.8% twins, and 6.7% triplets. It is our goal to minimize the risk of multiple gestation while maximizing the chances for pregnancy. Therefore, we have general guidelines to limit the number of embryos transferred. The use of blastocyst transfer may also be used to achieve this goal. For selected patients, single blastocyst transfer is also available. However, we do manage each case individually, and there are some instances in which a couple may wish to transfer more than the recommended number of embryos. We attempt to be responsive to the needs of the couple, while balancing the number of embryos transferred with the risk of higher order pregnancy. Based on data from the CDC, the average number of embryos transferred (all ages) per patient for fresh cycles in our program is 2 embryos for both non-donor and donor cycles.
